Evaluation of Students Learning in Burkina Faso

Within the framework of the intensification of the capacities of planning and piloting the primary education, the Ministry of Primary Education in the Burkina Faso decided, in April, 2000, to set up a device of permanent follow-up of the school learning.

The activity consists of a collection of data with a representative sample of schools of the school universe of the primary education of the country. The collected data concern the level of acquisition of the pupils of the various levels of the primary education in the essential disciplines as well as the context in which are made these learnings.

Considering the necessity of establishing in a long-lasting way the evaluation of the school experiences, the accompaniment of the agents responsible for the activity by an expert in evaluation and data analysis was considered indispensable for a know-how transmission. The Micro Centre Pythagore firm is associated with this activity as expert in educational evaluation.

During the school year 2004-2005, a survey on the school experiences was realized with representative samples of the students of CP1 (Grade 1) and CE2 (Grade 4). French and Mathematics were evaluated. The report of evaluation was made public in December 2005.

In May 2006, another survey took place with students of CP2 (Grade 2) and CM1 (Grade 5); French, Mathematics and Science were the object of this evaluation. A test of reading was also administered to students' sub-sample. The teachers of the estimated students were invited to pronounce on the opportunity which had their students to learn the planned curriculum. The communication of the results was made at the beginning of year 2007.

During the school year 2006-2007, the survey on the school experiences touched the students of CE2 (Grade 3) and CM2 (Grade 6). French, Mathematics and Science were the object of the evaluation. Quite as for the survey of 2006, that of the 2007 also touched the reading; besides, the teachers pronounced on the opportunity which had their students to learn the planned curriculum. The communication of the results was made at the beginning of year 2008.

The second cycle of evaluation began during the school year 2007-2008. So, in May, 2008, the evaluation concerned the students of CP1 and CE2; in 2010 it is about the evaluation of the classes of CP2 and CM1. Finally, in May, 2012, it is the evaluation of the last group of students of the primary level that is the CE1 and CM2. Note that from the evaluation realized in 2010, the selected sample allows to produce statistics with regard to every province of the country; for it, approximately 20000 students are evaluated.
